In difficult moments of our lives, we naturally seek support. We long for a sense of security and look for solutions that seem most logical to us. But do we always choose wisely? Isaiah 31 shows us that sometimes our hopes can be misleading.
Israel and Its Misplaced Trust in Egypt
During the time of the prophet Isaiah, the Israelites faced a great threat from Assyria. Instead of trusting God, they sought help from Egypt—a powerful nation with many chariots and a mighty army. God, through Isaiah, warns them:
“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots (…), but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek the Lord” (Isaiah 31:1).
God reminds them that Egypt is merely human strength—their horses and chariots cannot compare to His power.
Are Our “Egypts” Our Hope?
Although today we do not rely on chariots and horses, we often put our trust in other earthly means: money, politics, human connections, or our own abilities. We seek solutions where strength and security seem to be, but we forget that true help comes from God.
God as Our Ultimate Protection
Isaiah 31 compares God to a lion that does not fear threats and to a bird hovering over Jerusalem to protect it. This is an image of God’s care and power. When we entrust our matters to Him, we receive true security.

A Lesson for Us
This chapter is a reminder not to seek support in what seems strong by human standards, but to rely on God. His care is certain and never fails. Instead of asking, “Where will I find help?” perhaps we should ask, “Do I fully trust God?”
